Actually, I bought plans for Tideway 14 before I ever knew John Welsford or decided to build Resolution and sail solo around the world. I even started building the bulkheads in my office, but things took an entirely different turn before I could even get a jig set up. One partially finished bulkhead sits behind my house, weathered, but solid and usable. A couple of coats of paint will cover the gray.
Still, the question remains: why Tideway 14?
I’ve owned several boats over the years, some built from scratch, some built from a bare hull, some purchased second hand. The smallest of my boats was Charlie’s Angel, which I wrote about in Small Craft Advisor some years ago. She was only 16 feet long, stem to stern, and I sailed her more than any other boat I’ve owned. She didn’t need a crew, though I often sailed with another person and sometimes two on board. I could just hop in and leave. And because she was unsinkable, I felt confident sailing her out of sight of land.
I lost my Bluewater 21 in the huge typhoon that hit Japan in September 2001. She was moored to a barrel of concrete in a tidewater flat. The storm surge during the typhoon – typhoons always seem to hit at high tide – took the water level 15 feet above the high-tide line. The Bluewater had only about 4:1 scope on her mooring line and she easily dragged the barrel of concrete to the retaining wall and then proceeded to bash her keel out. Not only was I sick about the typhoon, I was without a boat. And in looking at small, tough boats, I found Tideway 14.
Paul’s Tideway had what I wanted in a pocket yacht. Plum stem with a bowsprit to spread the sail plan out. A length-beam ratio of about 2.3:1. Heavy displacement – the figures say she weighs 1900 pounds loaded. Long keel – my experience tells me that full-keel boats track more solidly than fin keelers, and I believe I will be able to set up a sheet-to-tiller self-steering system on Tideway. Sitting headroom – the clearance in the main salon is over three feet, and a person of my height needs just three feet to be able to sit up straight. Full-length berths – one on each side. Room for a galley and a Porta-potti. Easy construction. Well, Tideway could be easier, but still, stitch and glue to begin with. Paul calls for two layers of 6mm ply for the hull and three layers on the bottom. So here is a little cruiser with a hull made of a half inch of marine ply and a bottom that’s three-quarters of an inch thick. That’s a lot of strength for a little boat. I see that the Vendee Globe Open 60s are coming apart as the first leg of the solo around the world race begins. That won’t happen to a Tideway 14.
So what else is on the pro column of the Tideway 14 design?
Dead simple rigging. Paul calls for few blocks and runs the gaff setup with holes and three-strand braid. I will make it even simpler with a loose-footed main. Paul has a simple hank-on jib, but I will probably put the jib on a furler and set it flying just behind the forestay. That may mean adding about three inches to the length of the bowsprit. I also like the mast set in a tabernacle. A number of marinas in Japan are located up rivers that are crossed by fairly low bridges. It’s good to be able to easily lower the mast.
